Date: Wednesday, March 24, 2010
Time: 4:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Location: The Print Center. (1614 Latimer Street, Between Spruce & Locust Streets)
An itinerant press that has been traveling the United States since 2005. Recent event locations include: Museum of Contemporary Art, St. Louis, MO (2008); Tamarind Institute, Albuquerque, NM (2008); University of Kansas, Lawrence (2007); Space 1026, Philadelphia (2007); and Pratt Institute, Brooklyn (2007).
Over the past five years Drive By Press has been continuously on the road, driving over 100,000 miles to create thousands of prints, as well as custom printing tens of thousands of posters and t-shirts at events ranging from art exhibitions to music festivals to artist visits on university campuses. Working with a 600 pound press mounted into the back of van, their guerrilla-style events take place rain or shine on city streets and parking lots across the country. Embracing a do-it-yourself ethos, Joseph Velaquez and Greg Nanney have been celebrated for their commitment to the democratization of art making through print. At each of their events they draw, carve and print several new woodblock works in collaboration with the public. They also display, share and discuss works from the large collection of prints they travel with by numerous other artists and print publishers.
Drive By Press will present one of their signature one-day-only print events during The Graphic Unconscious as part of the Southern Graphics Conference. The entire block of Latimer Street in front of The Print Center will be closed to traffic for the event. More info at http://www.drivebypress.com
